Erase Errata: Other Animals

PoMo no-wave grrrrly action: Erase Errata rock and frug like none other on this, their debut long-playing sweat fest. Not so far away (only twenty years and a different sex) than Leed's polito-crunchers Gang of Four, EE take the funky jerk of late 70s NY downtown, lose the junkie skank, and update the message to suit a more femme-empowered audience. Those burdened with penises (or strap-ons) need not cower, however, as Erase Errata are deep with the 'free yr mind and yr ass will follow' ethos. But you better free that mind boyo, or leave it outside. Very, very funky indeed. Other Animals distills the distinct Erase Errata live personalities into a homogenized whole: Sara/guitar: soopahkool; Bianca/drums: foxy fine, funky fresh; Ellie/bass: baaadaaass (and I still need to buy a vowel); Jenny/vox/trumpet: I am Miles (except for the Black misogynist male part, but her spex are brill) I am James Chance (except for the heroin-addled White male.....oh hell, you get the idea - what I mean is pure goddess like genius) (Shit. Run on sentence. And a horrible pun. And too many parentheses. My bad.)
I am such a fan - a shame I'm an idiot! What I meant in the rant above is that the deep and the funky and the freaky and the political get machined into a singular force of recorded expression: the deeeep bass and the brittle crackle are excised to create a thick thud o' femme funk. What EE lose in personality they gain in heaviness: Jenny's vocals, in fact the lyrics themselves, are an equal percussion instrument with the drums, and for that matter, the wakka-wakka guitar. It is indeed a special treat when the medium meets the measure of the message and delivers it with the itchy imperative that insists that you better dance or scratch it off!!! (Jesus, Bill, please stop.)
I totally dig this band. See them live. Buy this disc.
